Being stuck in side control is a problem. If you are in this situation it means that a lot has gone wrong already and your opponent is dominating you. However, Jiu Jitsu offers a technique for every position and every situation, and this is not the exception. As with most defensive situations from the bottom of side control, you should start with proper framing and facing your opponent.
Once you establish your frames and you found enough space to insert your elbow, instead of going for the classic under-hook, you will establish grips to control your opponent's hips. The next step is to trap your opponent's leg into a half guard and work your sweep by taking over your opponent's centre of gravity, and complete the transition in the top mount. This is a very technical transition and you need to pay attention to the details as Sensei Douglas Santos describes in the video.
